AI to speak with babies?

Hello there,
Today’s newsletter covers a startup trying to speak to babies, OpenAI’s revenue growth, and how AI compares against other hype cycles.
Let’s dive in!
Big Story 🥁

A startup is looking to use AI to help with an ancient challenge: understanding upset babies.
Capella is set to launch the first AI-powered baby cry translator. Its aim is to inform parents when their young one is hungry, tired, or needs a diaper change. It uses the duration and pitch of the cry to help differentiate needs.
There are 2 questions that immediately spring to mind:
How accurate will Capella be? In reality, given the limited frustrations and needs of someone who hasn’t yet mastered object permanence, it’s a bit of a roulette spin to start.
How big a problem are they solving? Is a child hungry — almost always! Does a diaper need changing — let’s do a quick smell test.
Undoubtedly, there will be early adopters, as there is with any new idea. But understanding the depth of the problem will help determine mass market appeal and willingness to pay — crucial for any startup.
